Trouble Shooting

ProCoat Products strives to provide the highest quality in products and services. As with any product, the final results are directly related to how they are applied. Here are helpful tips to guide the applicator when restoring ceilings. It is highly recommended that the applicator review the “ProCoustic Application Guide” whenever confronting an unfamiliar situation or when experiencing problems.

Please contact our corporate office at (781) 767-2270 if the problem you are experiencing is not addressed.

TECHNICAL QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

CONCERN PROBABLE CAUSE RECOMMENDATION
I opened the pail and the ProCoustic is very thick. The product is old. Add water, a little at a time, (but no more than 1-qt./gallon). Mix after each addition of water until proper viscosity is achieved.
I opened the pail and the ProCoustic is lumpy like cottage cheese. The product has been frozen. DO NOT USE IT.
After spraying the ProCoustic, it dried leaving a chalky film on the ceiling surface. The product has been applied at too high a pressure resulting in dried material landing on the surface, or Re-spray at the lowest pressure that will provide a clean fan without “fingers” or “tails.”
Too much water has been added to the product. Box (mix) with a new pail of product to increase viscosity.
After application, there are lap marks or streaking on the ceiling. The tip pressure may be too high, or Re-spray at the lowest pressure that will provide a clean fan without “fingers” or “tails.”
The spray tip is too worn, or Replace with a new tip.
The spray head is too close to the ceiling, or Back the spray head off to about 10-12 inches from the ceiling surface.
The sprayer is trigger at the end of a pass causing build-up as the direction is reversed. Keep the wand in constant motion. Release the trigger at the end of each pass and compress it to begin a new one.
The spray tip keeps clogging. A partially used pail was not sealed, allowing some material to dry, or Strain the product with a fine meshed strainer.
The filters are clogged and need to be cleaned. Clean the filters in the gun and the pump.
In a newly-opened ProCoustic pail there is a yellow film on the top layer. That is normal in a pail that has not yet been mixed properly. Mix the product. If a beater is used, strain the product before attempting application.
After spraying ProCoustic, there is a yellowing (bleed-through) on the ceiling. The ceiling was not properly cleaned of surface contamination that might contain nicotine and/or grease. After the ceiling has dried, mist an application of 50/50 bleach and water over the surface. Repeat until the yellow is no longer apparent.
The ProCoustic puddles on the grids and air diffusers. Too much product was applied. Allow to dry. Sand smooth and touch up with ProCoat Tile Restorer in Aerosol (color: Ultra-white).
The ceiling was cleaned but it still has a yellowish color. The aging process can often result in a yellowish color. Yellow, due to aging, will not cause a bleed-through. Apply ProCoustic as is normal.
I have tinted ProCoustic to a designer color and after spraying there is an apparent streaking. After adding the tints, the product was not adequately mixed before spraying, or Mix product thoroughly and re-spray the area.
The spray technique needs to be modified, or Lower the pressure, change the tip, and/or stay 10-12 inches from the surface.
I am using much more product than I expected. Product application is different than when applying a conventional paint product, or Properly adjust pressure, tip size, and overlap to reduce the amount of material used.
The ceiling tiles are very old, or Apply sufficient material to overcome the dryness of the material, due to age.
The type of ceiling surface is not smooth, or Spray the product in multiple directions to obtain full coverage.
The tip pressure is too high, or Spray at the lowest pressure that will provide a clean fan without “fingers” or “tails.”
Spray tip is worn. Replace the tip.
Water stains are bleeding through the ProCoustic. The water stains have not been pre-primed and dried, or Touch up with ProCoat Tile Restorer in Aerosol (color: Ultra-white).
The stains could still be wet. Fix source of moisture, then touch up with ProCoat Tile Restorer in Aerosol (color: Ultra-white).
The ProCoustic is peeling off the aluminum air vents. The aluminum vents are untreated. Untreated aluminum should be pre-primed before applying any top coat finish to provide the required bond.
How do I remove the over-spray? Affected area was not properly covered. Use a soft brush and warm water to remove the over-spray.
